The inaugural trial rides are over. The feedback – A GREAT RIDE!

A ride that the masses have not yet found

This ride could be something for you

River Valley is thrilled to be able to offer departures on the Gorges to See Cycle Cycle Journey again.

This 200km ride starts on the Taihape – Napier Road, at the point of the main divide, finishing at the seaside community of Koitiata beside the Tasman Sea.

We will be riding the trail over four days, with overnight stays at River Valley Lodge – two nights, Awastone at Mangaweka – one night, and Rathmoy Lodge at Hunterville – one night. Accommodation is a mix of ensuited and shared facilities rooms.

Only the Second Season

This is only the second season for this ride, and because of this, we encourage you to look at it as an adventure. As such, be prepared for anything. We have prepared regular departure dates, but we will see what we can do if you have a group of 6-8 riders and need a particular date. Arranging alternative accommodation may be the limiting factor.

Much of the Rangitikei District is hill country with the best and most picturesque hidden away from State Highway 1. Of course, the downside of hill country is that there are some significant hills, but the upside is spectacular views and fun downhills.

The Rangitikei District, away from State Highway 1, is a uniquely beautiful area in which to ride through. The views, remote country roads and small communities make it a fantastic riding experience.

Daily climb can be as much as 1200 metres, with the daily distance varying from 40 km to 65km.

Trail surfaces

10% is on cross-country farm tracks with variable surfaces

50% is on backcountry gravel roads

40% is on sealed, mostly quieter (except for about 5 km) country roads.

Choice of Bike

We strongly recommend e-bikes only for this departure. We like a more mountain bike style, but if you have ridden similar terrain on other styles of bike, then that may be fine. However, they do need nice wide tyres. If you are unsure about the suitability of your bike, send us a photo, and we will let you know what we think.

Please, no smaller than 500wh batteries.

Bike Hire (if Required)

If you feel that this trip may be you, but you don’t have an appropriate bike, then we have got you sorted.  We have a range of Giant Talon and Liv Tempts available for hire. These must be booked in advance as the bikes are in steady demand.

How Does The Ride Work?

This a guided ride. The trail route includes sections of farm tracks that are not marked. Your guide will help you navigate through these sections. The route traverses undulating terrain, with plenty of points worth stopping at to take in the view.

Each afternoon, your luggage will be delivered to the next night’s accommodation, meeting you there on your arrival. Maximum of 15kg per person, please.

Meals are provided at the establishment where you will stay, except at Rathmoy Lodge, where your guides will prepare the meal.

Once you arrive at Koitiata, our van transport will meet you and shuttle you back to River Valley and your vehicles.

From there, you may depart or book an extra night’s accommodation at River Valley Lodge.

Please Note: To operate this trip, we require a minimum number of four riders. If this number is not reached, then the trip may be cancelled. If the trip is cancelled, 100% of your deposit will be refunded.
